Two hours of talent show tryouts :) and I forgot my sketch book and my 4 year old had the phone for plants vs zombies. Found some random paper in my purse and sketched anyway :)

Banjo

Went to Story Slam at the lawrence arts center last night - drew the banjo player who went on before the story tellers. Such a lovely evening.

Bench

Was really not feeling it today - but I have a series of paintings brewing in my head that involve castle-like interiors - so at Tony's violin lesson I drew the legs of the teacher's ornate bench. I need to eventually start thinking about composition before I start - but not today. Today I was just doing well to get out a pencil

Planning

Sketches for a painting series I'm working on for an upcoming show. I can tell that my daily drawing practice is paying off - it's so much easier to now to sketch what I want my paintings to look like. And really - improving my paintings is the main point to all this.

Auto parts

I'm subbing high school auto tech today. I had no idea this even existed. These kids are hilarious sitting around bs-ing about cars all hour. Forgot my sketch book today! But the teacher had a stash of lovely blue pencils in his desk. And this random car part on his desk.  Thermostat thing? Who knows :)

Middle school figure studies

Taught middle school art today - and the class was doing figure sketching!! Kids took turns standing on the tables for 10 minutes while the class drew them - so I joined in for a few.

Working in an old sketch

I penciled in these people quickly at fric and frac weeks ago. Never finished the drawing. So today I added fric details in from memory. It's a strange picture now. I kinda like it :)

Ergonomics

Subbing high school business education today. I still find the sight of kids sitting at a computer desk with a laptop on their laps and a smart phone in their pockets to be kinda mind boggling. But that's cuz im old :)

Violin lesson

Toby from the back - at his violin lesson

Blind contour

Started drawing Toby - but he didn't want to sit still and I was tired - so I switched to blind contour. Then added some color. This was a fun one :)

Hall Chair

Subbing first grade today - I sketched this chair while watching a small group of kids in the hall while they took an assessment.  They finished their test before I finished my chair :)

Washy watercolor flower

Started this with a real flower as reference. Then my 4 year old tore that up for me - so I kept going on my own :)

Drawing Lab 47: The Office

I haven't done a Drawing Lab in months and months and months. Because I got stuck on this one. The goal was to make a series of sketches using office supplies. But I don't work in an office - I'm a substitute teacher and I don't want to mess with teacher's desks more than absolutely nessessary. So long ago I conceived this idea to use last year's planner as a base for sketches. I always feel bad throwing away this document of the year - but keeping it is clutter - so now I'll at least have photo documentation of a few days.
So I got the idea - put the old planner in my purse -  and carried it around for over 6 months without touching it.
I realized I didn't want to use my planner as a sketchbook. I wanted to use my sketchbook as a sketchbook. Once I decided to do this project at home with paint - it went much better!

Out the window

My son takes violin lessons in the west bottoms. I'm excited to sketch outside there in warmer weather - but today I sketched out the window

After First Friday

The sherry leedy gallery has an amazing exhibit up this month. I drew this so I could remember to steal all the good ideas.

Washy watercolor baby bobcat

This cat ended up looking rather pissed :) and not nearly as cute as the photo I was using - but I kinda like that. It's got some personality for sure :)

Fire tree

Doodled in crayon while studying spelling words with my son. The kids kept telling me how the tree was on fire - or it looked fuzzy :)

Sleepy sketching

So sleepy and all I want to do is go to bed - but I'm trying to sketch every day - so I cranked this out. There. Did it.

Out the window

During my break teaching music today I looked out the window and sketched the electronics supply store on Main Street.

Painting sketch

Hibernating bear sketch for a new painting I'm working on
I don't usually use ebony pencils but I pulled one out for the bear and it worked well for all those dark shadows

They were really having a lot more fun than it looks like in this picture :)

Crafty drawing

I subbed preschool today. I sat at the art table with a boy who was explaining to me how much he loved cutting snow flakes and how he could do it forever.  I agree.

Jonas sleeping in the car

Sleeping is good - he holds nice and still :)

For most of my life I have been vehemently anti-mechanical pencils. But lately I've been giving them a second chance - mostly because I can carry them around in my bag - wooden pencils fail at that. The points break off and they are useless. So Ya - this was mechanical pencil. Works for small stuff - I think id still prefer wooden pencil if I was working big.

From summer

While I was digging through a bag for supplies for a different project I came across another sketchbook from last summer - during that time where I had no camera and wasn't posting photos. I kinda love them - looking forward to warmer weather so I can get out and do more of these.

Outside Martin nature center in Okc - done while waiting for jonas to wake up from the same nap I mentioned in a post a couple days ago - traveling wore him out :)

Roanoke park - clearly I didn't plan my composition ahead of time - or I wouldn't have stuck that trash can smack dab in the middle like that. Not sure what I was thinking there.

Jesse changing strings

Jesse changing his guitar strings

End of book 3 - urban sketching

View from front of fric and frac

Loose park - while I was hiding during hide and seek - I hid well.

Dog out the window at the quay coffee shop.
